Abstract

This research was conducted to find out the managerial strategies Principal's managerial strategy in developing students‘ literacy at SMP Swasta Islam An Nizam Medan, the activities implemented by the principal of SMP Swasta Islam An Nizam Medan in developing students’ literacy, and the supporting and inhibiting factors in implementing the principal's managerial strategy in developing students' literacy at SMP Swasta Islam An Nizam Medan. This research methodology uses a qualitative research approach with a case study research type. In this study, data collection was carried out using several techniques, namely, interviews, observation, and documentation. The subjects of this study include the principal as the main informant along with the vice principal, teachers, and students as supporting informants. Analysing the data of this research through steps including, data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing/verification. The results of this study indicate that the principal's managerial strategy in developing student literacy at SMP Swasta Islam An Nizam Medan consists of: a) planning includes strengthening governance, increasing the number and variety of reading sources and expanding access to learning resources and learning coverage, b) organizing includes cooperation, c) mobilizing includes empowering human resources, and d) supervision includes optimizing the program. The activities implemented by the head of SMP Swasta Islam An Nizam Medan in developing student literacy include: a) literacy 15 minutes before learning, b) book reviews, and c) creating a literacy-rich environment. Supporting and inhibiting factors in implementing the principal's managerial strategy in developing students' literacy at SMP Swasta Islam An Nizam Medan include several factors, namely, the fulfillment of all aspects of literacy needs, the high commitment of the principal, teamwork, lack of teacher consistency when running the program, lack of preparation, and lack of student self-discipline.
