Abstract

Dug well water located in Kualuh Leidong District, North Labuhanbatu Regency can’t be directly used for hygiene and sanitation purposes, this is due to water quality that does not meet clean water standards. The purpose of this study was to determine the characteristics of nipah shell activated carbon (nypa fruticans) activated with HCl concentration of 2 M, silica sand and zeolite as water filter media, water quality of dug wells in the study area before and after filtration, and optimal filtration design in improving water quality between filtration designs I (activated carbon : silica sand : zeolite), filtration design II (activated carbon : zeolite : silica sand) and filtration design III (zeolite : silica sand : activated carbon). From the results of the physical test of nipah shell activated carbon (nypa fruticans) shows that all parameters tested have met good activated carbon standards based on SNI 06-3730-1995, From the results of water quality testing using physical and chemical parameters, there is 2 physical parameter and 1 chemical parameter that does not meet the standard, namely total dissolve solid (TDS), turbidity and manganese (Mn) levels. From the results of the percentage reduction in total dissolve solid (TDS), turbidity and dissolved manganese (Mn) levels, it can be concluded that filtration design I with variations in the location of activated carbon : silica sand : zeolite is the optimal filtration design in improving water quality.
