Abstract

The objective of this research was to know the influences of direct method on students‘ ability in speaking at SMP Swasta Islam An-Nizam. The population of this research was the ninth grade of SMP Swasta Islam An-Nizam. The sample of this research was IX Hasyim Asyari that consists of 22 students as experimental group and IX Ahmad Dahlan that consist of 22 students as control group. This research employed quasi-experimental design. This type of research involves two group with Experimental group and Control group. The data collection technique in this research was using pre-test, treatment, and post-test. The results of this research indicate that there are the influences of direct method without direct method in speaking ability. This is evidenced proved by the researcher got the data in the experimental group are the lowest score is 60 and the higher score is 96. Meanwhile, in control group are the lowest score is 60 and the higher score is 80. Then, the researcher continues has been calculated the data, so the researcher concluded the data is a significant difference of students‘ ability in speaking is the experiment and control group. From the results of the student scores, it can be considered that using Direct Method has more significant effect than without using Direct Method because the mean (M) of gained score of experimental class in pre-test score 60,91 and post-test score is 81,82 while the mean (M) of gained score in controlled class in pre-test score is 56,55 and in post-test score is 67.64 for students at SMP Swasta Islam An-Nizam.
