Abstract

English is a universal language where a lot of people from different country are using English as their second language. Students in Indonesia study English begin in elementary school and continue through senior high school. Speaking is one method of communication because it helps others understand the information we are trying to convey. Watching is one of the efficient way that students do to increase their speaking ability. This research conducted at Al Mukhlishin Islamic Boarding School grade XII. The purpose of this study is to determine whether English movies at Al Muhkhlishin Islamic Boarding School have a substantial impact on the speaking abilities of the pupils. Quantitative research is used in this study. Data collection techniques in this study are questionnaire and English speaking test. The result of the study, students who watch English movie often were more fluent in speaking English. Additionally, students’ ability in speaking English was increased due to the exposed to the language often such as watching English movie, there were differences between students who often, very often, rare and very seldom in watching English movie. Approximately 40% of students could answer all of the questions given perfectly, which means that they were passed the test with the total score more than 3.5/5 with the average 2.86. Only 4 students who passed the test well. And the rest of the students failed the test with the total score less than 3.5/5. T-test calculations showed that t count = 12.02355 and t table for = 5% was 2.306 respectively. Thus, it was established that English movies had a considerable impact on pupils' speaking abilities at Al Mukhlishin Islamic Boarding School.
