Abstract

This research aimed at discovering (1) the types of language style used by the English department students of UINSU in writing captions on Instagram; (2) the reasons for using language style in writing caption on Instagram. This research used qualitative method as the research design. The data of this research were the captions written by English department students of UINSU in their Instagram accounts. The data collection was done by using documentation and questionnaire. The data were analyzed by using interactive model proposed by Miles and Huberman which consisted of three steps namely data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing/verification. The findings of this research showed that: (1) there were three types of language styles used by the English department students of UINSU in writing their Instagram caption. The types were formal style, consultative style and casual style. The most dominantly used style was consultative style, and; (2) there were five reasons for using language style in their Instagram captions. They were to express feeling or emotion (happiness), to express something in aesthetic way (poetic), to get something done or to get someone do something (directive), to express solidarity or empathy to others (phatic), and to provide information (referential). The most dominant reason was to express feeling or emotion (expressive).
