Abstract
The purpose of this research is to describe the students’ abilities in writing argumentative essay. The research is designed as a quantitative descriptive method. The population of this research is the Eighth Semester Students in the English Department (TBI) at State Islamic University of North Sumatera especially in the class TBI 1. This research used random sampling technique in deciding the sample. The samples were 20 students. The students were asked to write argumentative essay. Researcher used rubric score adapted from Lindquist & Mc Carrel (2017) and Swales (1990) which consists of introduction, body paragraph, conclusion, and language use to analyze the essay. The results could be concluded that the students’ in English Department at State Islamic University of North Sumatera in writing argumentative in the table above, it was found that 45% sample were able in writing argumentative essay, 45% sample were reasonable in writing argumentative essay while 10% of the sample were unable in writing argumentative essay.
