Abstract

The appropriate teaching method for reading comprehension in high school is necessary nowadays to make the student understand a text effectively, One of the most used in teaching reading that belief as one of appropriate methods is SQ4R method. The objective of this study was to find out whether or not there was a significant effect of using SQ4R method on students’ reading comprehension of narrative text at the tenth grade of Senior High School. Quantitative research with quasi- experimental design was used in this study with 211 students as the population. By using lottery technique, two classes were chosen as the sample. 36 students from X-IPS 2 as control class and 35 students from X-IA 2 as experimental class. In collecting the data, a reading test in form of multiple choice and essay was used in this study and was distributed into pre-test and post-test. Then, the dependent t-test was used to analyze the collected data. The results show that the tobserved (to) in experimental class is higher than ttable (tt) in the significant level of 0,05 (tobserved = 3,138 > ttable = 1,995) at the degree of freedom (df) = 69. Therefore, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and null hypothesis (H0) is rejected. Therefore, it can be concluded that SQ4R method gives significant effect on students’ reading comprehension at the tenth grade students of senior high school.
