Abstract
The aim of this research is to know (1) the effectiveness of Islamic Institution of Public Broadcasting Institution of Republic Indonesia Television of North Sumatra (LPP TVRI SUMUT) in improving the media literacy ability of viewers in Medan City, (2) Is there any significant difference of viewers watching MAI Public Broadcasting Institution Television Republic of Indonesia North Sumatra and without watching MAI in improving the media literacy ability of viewers in Medan City? This study used a mixed method (combined qualitative and quantitative). Data collection techniques were conducted through: interviews, questionnaires, participant observation, documentation studies, and reference searching. Informants were taken by using snowball sampling technique whereas respondents were taken based on random sampling technique to support qualitative data. Data analysis using Spradley Model include: reducing, presenting data and withdrawal or verification conclusion. The results showed that literate television audience in the studio and the community appear based on what they digest from da'wah material delivered by the speakers. Based on the informant's statement, the Islamic Mimbar (MAI) event is very effective in inspiring, and interactive communication access for dialogue is very helpful for viewers to ask for solutions to the problems faced. There are factors that influence the effectiveness of MAI events in improving the media literacy of viewers such as cognitive, affective and behavoiur. Many viewers get the wisdom and goodness and practice the propagation material after following the MAI event. Viewers are not just gaining information from the communicator (resource) related to the material of Islam, but the desire to preach also arise from the hearts of viewers. Next there is a significant difference in viewer media literacy between watching MAI events without watching MAI events. After the implementation of the MAI event was completed the hypothesis test or the difference of two average between the control group and the experimental group, so it is obtained that there are differences between the two groups significantly, because it obtained t count of 5.191 and significance 0.000, so t is in the rejection region Ha ( Ha ≠ 0). Meaning there is a significant difference between media literate viewers who watch MAI events with viewers without watching MAI Television Public Broadcasting Institution Republic of Indonesia, received.
