Abstract

The aim of this research is to improve students’ vocabulary mastery after being taught using Sketch and Label at SMP Muhammadiyah 02 Medan. The research was conducted with Classroom Action Research. The subject of study was students of class VII-A Plus at SMP Muhammadiyah 02 Medan which consisted of 23 students in the academic year 2016/2017. The qualitative data were taken from observation sheet, interview, questionnaire, and documentation. The quantitative data were taken from tests, which was carried out in the end of every cycle. The test was given to the students in form of pre-test, post test in the first cycle and the post test in the second cycle. The result of the data analysis showed that the score of students increased from the first meeting namely cycle I until the last meeting namely cycle II. It was showed from the mean of orientation test was 47,82 there was 17,39% (4 students) who got point 68 above. In the post test of cycle I, the mean of the post test of cycle I was 65.43, it was higher than orientation test. There was 39,13% (9 students) who got point 68 above. The percentage of the students’ score in the post test of cycle I to the orientation test was improvement 21. 74%. In the post test of cycle II the mean of the post test of cycle II was 80.21, and the percentage was 91.30% ( 21 students) who got point 68 above. The improvement of the students score from the post test of cycle I to the post test of cycle II was improvement 62. 17%. In other words, the students mastery in vocabulary was improved. Based on the observation, it showed that the excitement of the students were also improved.
