Abstract
This research is a field that aims to understand the process of acculturation Malays and Toba Batak eastern Sumatra (Asahan Tanjungbalai), and how many influences the Sultan of Asahan in the process of acculturation Malays and Toba Batak in Asahan. Tanjungbalai Asahan is one area with Malay culture. Malay as a cultural group has characteristics: speak Malay, Muslim, and Malay customs and habitual. This research uses descriptive qualitative research method. The results showed that the process of acculturation Malay and Muslim Toba Batak culture in the city came from the government Tanjungbalai Sultan Asahan I who ruled in the city Tanjungbalai before the independence of the Republic of Indonesia. Religious leaders (ulama) and traditional leaders also played a role in the acculturation process of Malay cultural values in Tanjungbalai, especially in the Batak Toba ethnic Muslim. Acculturation between these two cultures gave birth to a Malay culture has a different characteristic to the Malay culture in the archipelago. Malays in the city has the nature and character that tend to be rough and hard, like the Toba Batak ethnic character.
