Abstract
Used cooking oil can experience a decline in quality due to repeated use at high temperatures. One economical solution in cleaning used cooking oil is through adsorption method using activated carbon. Red onion skin is considered a potential choice as an adsorbent because it contains cellulose content reaching 41%-50% in dry conditions. The aim of this research is to evaluate the influence of phosphoric acid concentration on the characteristics of activated carbon from red onion skin in purifying used cooking oil. The research process involves several stages, starting from carbonization at a temperature of 400°C for 60 minutes using a furnace. The activation process is carried out with phosphoric acid with concentrations of 8%, 12%, 16%, and 20% with soaking process for 24 hours. The research results show that water content (8.74%), ash content (9.53%), volatile matter content (23.68%), and pure carbon content (66.79%) meet the SNI 06-3730-1995 standard. Used cooking oil according to SNI 3471:2013 in odor and color testing with initially abnormal conditions becoming normal. In acid number testing, the initial value of 2.24 mg KOH/gram becomes 0.33 mg KOH/gram. And in peroxide number testing, the initial value of 15.97 meq O2/kg becomes 8.00 meq O2/kg
