Abstract

Pronunciation is the way we make the sounds we utilize to make meaning when we talk. The reason for this research is to find out how the pronunciation ability of class X students at MAN 2 Tapanuli Tengah. The objectives of the research is the tenth grade students’ pronounciation ability at MAN 2 Tapanuli Tengah. The research used descriptive qualitatif methods. The data taken from test, the techniques for collecting data with the test as followed, the researcher gave the test to students to pronounce some word and record the process then the researcher described words by transcribing the recording pronunciation. Besides the test, the researcher take the data from observation and documentation. The result found that students’ pronunciation at Tenth grade MAN 2 Tapanuli Tengah was still low with score 30%. The students also difficulties in pronouncing diphthongs [eə] [iə] [uə] [ei] [ai] [o] and triphthongs [eiə] [ᴅɪə] [oɪə]. In addition, some difficulties in pronouncing vowels [u] [ɛ] and consonants [ɔ:] [u:]. After analyzing the data, it concluded that tenth grade students’ pronunciation ability at MAN 2 Tapanuli Tengah was still low.
