Abstract

Apart from listening, reading, and writing, speaking is one of the four basic skills in learning a foreign language. Speaking is the activity of communicating information or expressing one's thoughts and feelings through the use of spoken words. Daulay(2018) said that speaking is an activity to express feeling and idea orally. In relation with Mart (2012) also defined that speaking is being capable of speech, expressing or exchanging thoughts through using language. In our current society and global environment, it is fundamental to be able to communicate in English. Speaking ability is a significant element to gain when learning a second or foreign language because the effectiveness of learning the language is determined by learners' ability to speak the language studied. However, for many students nowadays, speaking can be a difficult challenge because it requires interaction. This is become the purpose of this study namely to find out and describe what actually become the difficulties in learning speaking that faced by the first-year students at MTsN Tanjung Balai. This study used a qualitative method where the data collected by the researcher based on the results of interviews, observation, and documentation by the researcher. From the finding and discussion, the students have some difficulties in speaking. The difficulties were consisted of the limitation in pronouncing the words, lack of vocabulary, low grammar skill, unconfident, fear of making mistake, and anxiety. From the problems the dominantly problem is pronunciation. Besides of the huge use of mother tongue in daily life, most of them stated that they were afraid to speak because they do not know what to say because of limited vocabulary and felt difficult to pronounce the words.
