Abstract

Within five years (2004-2009 period), the Jakarta Islamic Center (JIC) was well known by the society of Jakarta, Indonesia and Southeast Asia and even internationally through three things, first, the historical aspect that establish in the area of the former Kramat Tunggak rehabilitation site, until now this is still a reference for the process of changing or closing black areas into white areas. Second, the unique and contemporary aspects of the concept of the Jakarta Islamic Center. JIC is a forum that plays the activity of two main functions at the same time, being a religious center for the people of Jakarta and a center for Islamic studies which is carried out comprehensively and integratively. Third, the aspect of ummah development, JIC applies a mosque-based community development model without discriminating against certain sects or thought, so that it becomes a reference in moderating such diverse Islam that can be present at JIC. This study aims to determine the Jakarta Islamic Center's communication strategy in maintaining inter-religious harmony in the DKI Jakarta province and analyse the effectiveness of the communication strategy carried out by Jakarta Islamic in maintaining inter-religious harmony in the province of DKI Jakarta? Kirk and Miller cited by Syukur Kholil in Communication Research Methodology explain that qualitative research is a particular tradition in social science that is fundamentally dependent on human observation in its own area and relates to these people in their language and terminology. The Jakarta Islamic Center's strategy to promote inter-religious harmony is to open up as wide as possible to non-Muslim communities to use the facilities available at the Jakarta Islamic Center such as the library, audio-visual room and the JIC field. However, this is not written formally or officially by JIC in its various information media such as websites and other official announcements. The Jakarta Islamic Center does not plan and prepare specific strategies for programs that can establish and maintain inter-religious harmony. This is because JIC does not want to overlap the roles and functions of the Inter-religious Harmony Forum (FKUB). However, according to the head of Social and Cultural Affairs, Training and Assessment and Information and Communication, the implementation of these programs is actually important and needs to be carried out by JIC. Based on the research results, the researcher can draw the conclusion that JIC's communication strategy in establishing inter-religious harmon.
