Abstract

Research has been conducted aimed at (i) to determine the influence of variations in the composition of shell powder and coconut fiber with formaldehyde urea adhesive on the characteristics of particle boards, and (ii) to know the composition of mixing shell powder and coconut fibers, with formaldehyde urea adhesive to produce particle boards with optimum characteristics. The manufacture of particle boards uses the basic materials of coconut shell and coconut coir as well as formaldehyde urea adhesive. Variations in the composition of shell powder, and coconut fiber, with formaldehyde urea adhesive are 30%:30%:40%, 25%:35%:40%, 20%:40%:40%, 15%:45%:40%, 10%:50%:40%. In this study used a comparison of the composition of the amount of adhesive that remains 40% between the adhesive powder urea formaldehyde with water by using 2:1. The sample making process is pressed with UTM (Universal Testing Machine) machine with mold size 50 x 50 x 10 mm3 and 200 x 50 x 10 mm3. The drying time on the manufacture of particle boards is for 7 days. The particle board was successfully made using shell powder and coconut fiber with urea formaldehyde adhesive with a density value of 0.64-0.75 g/cm3, moisture content 12.94-15.84%, development thickness 5.33-15%, bending firmness 2645.12-6097.74 kgf/cm2, and broken firmness 87.129-54.615 kgf/cm2 . The composition of mixing shell powder and coconut fiber with formaldehyde urea adhesive to produce particle boards with optimum characteristics at sample composition variations of 30%:30%:40% (sample A).
